Subterranea - Erdställe
Subterranea is an editorial design project exploring the mysterious world of Erdställe, historic underground tunnel systems whose purpose remains largely unknown. The book combines research with visual storytelling to create an immersive reading experience that reflects the atmosphere of these hidden spaces.
The visual concept uses mouths as an artistic motif to symbolize the entrances and passages of the tunnels. Their organic forms create a striking visual parallel to the narrow openings and winding underground spaces, reinforcing the themes of mystery, discovery, and the unknown. This recurring element establishes a distinctive visual language that guides the reader throughout the publication.
The design focuses on typography, composition, pacing, and image placement to create a balanced and engaging editorial experience. Careful attention was given to layout, hierarchy, and the relationship between text and imagery, resulting in a publication that communicates both information and atmosphere.
